Can I use ExpressVPN's Lightway protocol on a router?
Lightway is not currently supported on third-party router firmware. Router-level ExpressVPN use relies on OpenVPN, which is well-supported on FlashRouters hardware via AsusWRT-Merlin. OpenVPN provides solid performance on the right hardware.
How is FlashRouters different from ExpressVPN's own routers?
ExpressVPN's Aircove router runs ExpressVPN's proprietary firmware and is locked to their service. In early 2026, ExpressVPN also ended firmware support for most legacy third-party router models. FlashRouters uses open-source AsusWRT-Merlin or OpenWRT — unaffected by that decision — and lets you run ExpressVPN via OpenVPN or switch to any other provider whenever you want.
Does running ExpressVPN on a router affect speed?
OpenVPN is more processor-intensive than newer protocols. Choosing a high-throughput router and connecting to nearby servers helps maintain good speeds. Wi-Fi 7 routers with hardware acceleration handle OpenVPN overhead noticeably better than older hardware.
