“Router firmware” is the operating system installed on a router that allows you to manage the router settings, enable various features, install VPN, and so much more! Each router firmware is designed with a specific use case, user, and router in mind. Router firmware can range from basic and easy, to complex and advanced.
Just like how Android OS is not compatible with Apple products and vice versa, not all router firmware is compatible with every router model.
In some cases, router firmware is designed for a specific piece of hardware in mind, and will only work with that hardware such as the case with the Privacy Hero firmware & router (a custom OpenWRT build). In other cases, the router firmware is designed with a broader variety of models in mind within the same brand, such as Asus Merlin.
Since we understand that each customer is unique, we’re proud to offer a wide variety of router firmware options! When it comes to finding the right firmware for our customers, we take into account a few different factors. Once we have a good understanding of you and your needs, we’re able to narrow down some choices.
While most router firmware options are compatible with top services such as NordVPN, ExpressVPN, IPVanish, SurfShark, ProtonVPN, CyberGhost, PureVPN & Private Internet Access and more supported VPN providers, there are some exceptions.
If you don’t have a VPN subscription yet, or you think you might want to change VPN providers later on in the future, our team always recommends going with a firmware option that supports all of our supported VPN providers. This leaves you the flexibility to change your VPN provider on the router, without changing the router firmware on the router.
What you plan on using the FlashRouter for plays a large role in the firmware our team will recommend. Whether you’re looking for a FlashRouter that can connect to wi-fi networks on the go or advanced parental controls to keep your little ones safe, we have a firmware option for you!
While there are a number of firmware features that are standard across all of our FlashRouters, such as VPN integration, there are some features that are unique to specific router firmware.
Most FlashRouters can be pre-configured before we ship them to offer a plug-and-play setup process. In some cases you may need to change your VPN server location or temporarily disable the VPN connection for one or all devices on the router.
A number of router firmware options were created with ease-of-use in mind, which is a great choice to help you learn the ins-and-outs if you are new to VPN, router management, or computers!
With features such as on/off switches for VPN, drop-down menus for various settings options, and easy to view interfaces, beginners and advanced users alike can benefit from an easy-to-use firmware option.
Now that we know what to consider when we’re choosing a router firmware, we can start comparing our options.
Below, you’ll find all of our firmware options along with some of their key features, VPN provider compatibility, and most popular customer use cases to help you choose a router firmware and narrow down your FlashRouter options.
