For the very first time, the Asus RT-N66U Dark Knight is ready to be flashed and upgraded with TomatoUSB open source firmware. It is truly a superhero of routers and one of the most sought-after routers on the market today. The RT-N66U exceeds the hype with its incomparable hardware: blazing fast 600 Mhz processor (25% more powerful than most top-tier devices), 4 times the high-end industry norm in Flash Memory/RAM, dual-band wireless speeds of up to 900 (450 Mbps + 450 Mbps) mbps, 2 USB ports, and much more.
The FlashRouters Asus RT-N66U fixes the one major complaint that so often arises with this superior hardware by replacing its faulty backbone—the lackluster Asus firmware. Upgrading the RT-N66U to Tomato turns a powerful router into a must-have wireless hub. Using the Asus RT-N66U's powerful antennae to decimate wireless dead spots is a cinch with a Wireless-N coverage area of over 450 feet! The best Wireless-N coverage area available. The RT-N66U takes the power and features of the highly popular Asus RT-N16 and doubles it. Installing Tomato USB firmware makes this device eminently more stable; no more reboots or router memory issues.
International Dual Voltage (100v - 240v): Ships with U.S. power cable, international adapters available as an low-cost add-on.
Whether you are looking for advanced bandwidth monitoring, a stronger wireless signal, or increased security, the Asus RT-N66U does not disappoint. In fact, the The Dark Knight has even garnered design awards worldwide for its slick appearance as well as almost unanimous positive reviews. Upgrading to Tomato on the RT-N66U integrates VPN connection options with OpenVPN & PPTP without affecting the device's dual-band capabilities.
Using a VPN service provider allows you to create a secure tunnel for connected devices just by connecting to the router, giving you an additional layer of Internet security & encryption. VPN also allows you to disguise your location, allowing you to access restricted content and American TV/films from outside the US on Netflix, Hulu, Crackle, Vudu, & more.

The Asus RT-N66U is by far the easiest router I've ever configured, and I've had many different brands. I bought it through FlashRouters and with my order asked that they preconfigure it for my HideMyAss VPN using L2TP - all I had to do was add my HMA login details when it arrived, plug it into my regular router that's connected to my local ISP, and I was watching US TV live and US streaming services, from Thailand.
Since I bought it I've emailed FlashRouters several times asking about upgrades, and they immediately send a link for a firmware upgrade download when there is one. It's too simple.
Then a few days ago I decided to change from using L2TP to OpenVPN, which meant a whole new configuration of the router which I was really nervous about, but it was as easy as emailing them again and getting a step-by-step reply the following day that enabled me to change the whole thing in less that 10 minutes (thanks Tom!).
For anyone contemplating the move to OpenVPN, the configuration is actuallly less involved than PPTP or L2TP, especially if you contact FlashRouters first.
For the record, the support team at Flashrouters are probably the best in the business. They reply to email very quickly, it's really personal service as if you're the only customer they have, and they never miss a step when it comes to getting exact instructions to help you. I simply can't recommend them highly enough.
I don't know what they did, but FR connected to my laptop and got my VPN working as it should - after I'd spent hours configuring it according to the 'instructions'.
Many thanks to the Tech Support team. I highly recommend them.
Well, not quite plug and play, but as a non-techy, I did have the router up and running and connecting to my VPN with very few hassles. The address range doesn't interfere with my broadband provider's network range, so I can switch between the two - on the rare occasions I will need to have clear access.
Many thanks to the FlashRouters team.
1. shipping. fedx bring to meadle east after 48 hours.amazing!!!
2.everething work perfect.
3. 1 of the best support.
I usually wait a few months before writing a review, as it may take some time for any glitches to occur. After 4 months of service, I can say the Asus RT-N66 has met my needs and the support from Flashrouters was superb. I am not all that technical and didn't want brick an expensive router and learn to use the new software with arcane instructions often available with opensource software.
Flashrouters came to my rescue with tested flashing and installation instructions which were goof proof. I was up and running in 1/2 hour after only having to change router name and password, SSID name and wireless passwords on both channels.
As I live out of the US, the unit solved my problem as to coverage, power, speed and VPN installation. I no longer need software for each device. I can use Roku without an computer, and watch my subscription TV with a VPN. Also I have no significant speed reduction with the VPN installed in the router.
Good job Flashrouters!
I kid you not when I say this router, with the FlashRouters firmware, did not only double my download speeds, but quadrupled them!!!! I can't praise this product enough. I run a small business and this was THE BEST investment i have made hands down for my company. I would recommend it to anyone and FlashRouters setup manual made it so easy to set up within 15 minutes. Yes, I'm pleased! And no, they didn't pay me to say this!
We can all connect to BBC with ease now, with no VPN software required on computers or devices.
Great service, great company!
Excellent product, service, and price !!! FlashRouters are real pros !!!
Very pleased....package was safely wrapped and arrived sooner than expected. Works perfectly to share HMA with all my devices.
The Asus RT-N66U Router TomatoUSB FlashRouter is amazing! This monster can handle streaming, downloading, working, mobile, tablet, stream devices, computers, and loads of devices all at once. Having over 20+ devices connected to this router at once routing it through a VPN I received no slowdown or problems. This power hog, along with FlashRouters proprietary software installed make this a must have for bandwidth hogs! My full review can be read http://freedomhacker.net/flashrouters-review-asus-n66u-tomatousb/
I received my router this week and have had a lot of time to investigate its proper uses. First of all the service is good and all that was expected was received. So Im very satisfied with the outcome.
I had the new Asus RT66u Tomato running in no time. I took my time during the minor configs I had to do for OpenVPN with IPvanish. So a good experience.
I’ll do a quick description of my setup: Primary router Apple Time Capsule, secondary router the Asus, and running iMac latest operating system (Mavericks) iPads iPhones.
Joe advised me to place the ASUS VPN router in secondary position in order to maintain my original network. Great advise!!
Some of the issues you can run into running a VPN are the highly secure websites such as banks and credit card companies. If you try access these site running VPN they will reject you and will end up calling customer service to get back into your online accounts. This I found out is a real pain. I guess there looking at the IP address and getting suspicious when it keeps changing. Cant blame them.
So here is how I work the VPN system. When connecting to banks and credit cards online I revert back to my home network on the Time Capsule. When done doing this business and reconnect to the VPN. On an iMac this is very easy to do and with Windows there should be no problem either.
So far this is the only issue discovered. There may be a few more website out there that will need special attention but yet to discover.
A few words about the Asus RTN66u. It kicks ass. My network is out about 200 feet from the outside walls of my house. Off course its locked.
So for those on the edge of converting to a VPN flash router, do it. If you want privacy, its the answer. The router has not lost connection the the VPN server as the software system would provided by IPvanish.
Also maintaining your original network is paramount. If you would just use the VPN router you tend to box yourself in a corner. I know you can work around this but this means entering the router config page. Its works but is more cumbersome. Also all guest access in my system does not go thru VPN. Just my preference.
Thanks Joe for the Great Service and help before I bought the router.
At $100 over the price of a stock N66U, Flashrouter's Tomato version definitely isn't cheap. But given the complexities of flashing custom firmware yourself, the potential for disaster, and knowledge required to get it working for your specific needs. I'd say it's well worth it!
I consider myself a power user but haven't had the time or inclination I once did with keeping up with the latest and greatest mods. After some initial research into DD-WRT/Tomato firmware, I soon decided that it was going to be too time consuming and potentially frustrating the get it done myself. So I goolge'd and found Flashrouters. I was at first a bit apprehensive about ordering from Flashrouters because I couldn't really find any solid reviews about the company and there were actually a couple of complaints against them. My initial email inquiry also seemed to have fallen into email abyss.
But since I spend a lot of my time in China for work, the need to bypass the country's firewall outweighed my concerns. I emailed Flashrouters once again and their sales manager Joe quickly responded to my inquiry. I needed a router that would be able to act as VPN client and connect to my personal Synology VPN server instead of a commercial VPN service. Joe made a few recommendations and we soon agreed upon the N66U Tomato version.
After receiving the unit, I couldn't get it to connect to my VPN. There was a brief moment where I thought at worst I overpaid for a very good router..
After emailing Flashrouters, I opened a support ticket and Jake stepped in to assist me. His prompt and professional service soon had me up and running. All my devices are now all happily connected through the N66U to my personal VPN via PPTP in a double routing configuration. Now keep in mind they didn't have a standard working configuration for Synology VPN's. I actually setup an account on my server for Jake to log in and fiddle around till it worked. And he not only provided me with double routing configurations. Upon my request, he also tested and sent me the configuration for single routing. That's going the extra mile!
One caveat for those in similar situations, I'm fine with connecting through PPTP; openVPN setup is apparently much more involved.
Despite a hiccup here and there, I'd highly recommend Flashrouter as anyone can sell you a good product. But great after sale service is hard to come by now-a-days.
I I tried to install VPN on my top of the range asus router And after taking it to a friend of mine who owns a computer shop as well it was still a nightmare to install in the end I contacted the guys from flashRouters I was dubious at first that it would work so when he turned up and work straight out of the box I was pleasantly surprised and if you have any problems like When I wanted to change my password etc The guys are always there to help you within five minutes of telling them they remotely log into my PC and fix the problem I cannot recommend them highly enough they take all the pain out of setting up a VPN router so now my daughter can watch British television in Spain thank you guys
Forget spending hours deciphering and testing the DD-WRT forums/website/Wiki for the correct hardware version and proper build only to discover that you've improperly flashed your device and bricked it.
FlashRouters offers what many router manufacturers won't: better firmware plus basic network and VPN service configuration assistance from responsive and highly trained USA tech support that will actually answer your questions.
