Recommended For: 5-7 users looking for high quality video streaming on 4-6 connected devices. Ideal for wired connections in small-to-mid-sized homes and home offices.
The Netgear AC1450 features a DD-WRT high-powered 800 MHz Broadcom CPU processor, one of the best offered with DD-WRT support.
Processing is the key to high performance routing, and this one has room to burn and grow as streaming video demands become increasingly more intensive.
For PrivateInternetAccess VPN users, a large processor is an imperative component for enabling the constant encryption and decryption the router will perform. The better the processor, the faster the VPN encrypted information can get to you.
In some cases you may notice that the FlashRouter team has updated this device from AC1450 firmware to Netgear R6300V2 firmware for DD-WRT. All open source firmware features available remain the same, and in fact our team has noticed performance improvements using these alternate builds.

I was looking for a device that could provide high quality video streaming for 4-6 devices, and didn't need the distance provided by larger routers. This seemed to be what I was looking for -- a router with DD-WRT running OpenVPN with decent processor, memory, and other specs.
I hooked it up... and nothing would load. I worked with support to confirm various settings, then to change multiple settings, and then finally to switch from OpenVPN to PPTP. At this point a few sites started to load, but extremely slowly. Most pages I tried to access simply timed out. The entire time I have been able to use my VPN service on both an iPhone and an Android device on the same network with no problems by configuring the VPN on these devices directly.
Eventually I was able to watch a few videos on one device with some buffering, but nowhere near the 4-6 devices promised, and not with what I would consider a high-quality experience. There are still sites that will not load via this router that work absolutely fine on the iPhone.
Maybe the problem is with this router, or the specific build of DD-WRT installed. I did not purchase the extended warranty, because I did not anticipate needing this much support for something that was advertised as plug-and-play. After more than a week of going back and forth with support I got frustrated. I know it can be difficult to do support by email and phone and the service I received was polite enough, but after more than a week I would have expected to have the issue escalated in some way.
I had high hopes for this, but I would agree with the previous reviewer: Spend extra to get a router a step or two up from this. This might look like a bargain, but you're better off with something else.
If you want to use this router for one device via PIA it's okay and any more and you will have speed issues. Support was okay but why setup a router for me and then spend hours trying different options to see if it helps. One big plus is wireless distance, wow amazing but speed not too good. Save your money and buy top of the line. Also if you are going to buy this router make sure to have it reset/reboot itself once a day.
Forget spending hours deciphering and testing the DD-WRT forums/website/Wiki for the correct hardware version and proper build only to discover that you've improperly flashed your device and bricked it.
FlashRouters offers what many router manufacturers won't: better firmware plus basic network and VPN service configuration assistance from responsive and highly trained USA tech support that will actually answer your questions.
