Halloween’s just a couple weeks away, and aside from the costume-planning, the main way most of us celebrate this most wickedly fun time of the year is by watching horror movies
Horror movie fans know that Netflix Instant, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Prime Instant have a some choice selections that suit their needs, but wouldn’t it be so much easier if there were a streaming site that dispensed with the riff-raff and just got down to the gore-y goods?
Rejoice, horror fans! Shudder is here!
Not too much to explain here: it’s a streaming site geared towards fans of horror movies. The selection is a little limited, as it’s only just recently launched, but this definitely simplifies things for the horror movie fan who wants to spend less time searching through the vast libraries of the more broadly appealing streaming sites.
Shudder costs $5 a month or $50 for the whole year. And you get a 14-day free trial, which means that you could, theoretically, start your trial today and it’ll last you almost the whole way to Halloween 2015.
A Few Choice Shudder Movies
Carnival of Souls – Let’s start things off with a classic, shall we? A woman improbably emerges alive from a car wreck and finds herself inexplicably drawn to an eerie abandoned carnival. That’s the whole plot, but this cult classic has endured more on the basis of its entrancing atmospherics than its complicated story. Definitely a good way to start off the Halloween season.
Santa Sangre – And while we’re in the realm of the surreal, maybe a little nightmarish arty horror from Alejandro Jodorowsky is in order. Santa Sangre, which tells the story of a man who brings his armless mother with him everywhere as he commits murders (at her bidding, of course), is full of unshakeable, horrifying images, making this the kind of horror movie that gets under your skin more than it startles you.
The Hills Have Eyes – Freak yourself out and celebrate the work of the sadly and recently departed writer/director Wes Craven by streaming The Hills Have Eyes. Surely you’re aware of the remakes, which added the gloss that a bigger budget can get you, but the original’s grimy, punky energy serves the story of a family with a broken-down camper trying to survive among mutants much better.
The House of the Devil – Until this film is widely considered a modern horror classic, we’re just going to keep on recommending it. Ti West’s breakthrough movie is impeccable, both as a tribute to ’80s schlock horror and as a masterfully calibrated, tension-ratcheting horrorshow. Plus, it’s got Tom Noonan, an invaluable asset to any eerie movie.
Willow Creek – The second-act of Bobcat Goldthwait’s career as a writer/director of wholly unique, low-budget indies has been undeniably unexpected and rewarding (his latest, the harrowing and funny documentary Call Me Lucky, is an essential stream). With that in mind, it makes perfect sense for Goldthwait to apply his sensibility to a cheap-o horror movie set at Willow Creek, the home of the Bigfoot legend.
