How to Stream MTV Tr3s From Anywhere

tres-world

Have you had trouble finding a streaming station that caters its programming to a Latin American audience? Search no longer, because we’ve got just the channel for you. It’s called Tr3s, and we’re going to tell you why you should be watching. Most importantly, we’re going to tell you how to watch Tr3s from anywhere in the world.

What is MTV Tr3s AKA MTV en Espanol?

Tr3s is an American cable and satellite station geared specifically towards a young Latin American demographic. The station initially offered programming that varies from original reality shows to music videos and even kid shows.

Tr3s’ origins go back to MTV S, which became MTV en Espanol. MTV en Espanol gradually turned into MTV Tr3s. In 2010, the station dropped the “MTV” part, finally leaving us with what we now know as Tr3s.

Now you’re wondering what “Tr3s” is, and we can’t blame you. “Tr3s” is merely a hipper way to say the word “tres”, meaning “three”. “Tres” represents the three pillars of the station. The pillars are “Music” (represented by the many music videos the channel offers), “Making it” (represented by Tr3s’ devotion to programming about achieving the Latin American dream), and “Milestones” (inspirational stories about Latino youth coming of age).

Maybe that sounds a little too serious for your tastes. Nonetheless, this is a fun enterprise, as one glance at the streaming site will let you know. Tr3s offers loads of music videos, artist videos, bio pages and shows designed to make this a one-stop entertainment shop for those in the market for Latin American culture. Don’t miss out.

Use VPNs to Watch Tr3s From Anywhere

Tr3s’ service doesn’t extend outside the US. Therefore, you will have to resort to somewhat unconventional means to see it if you live elsewhere.

FlashRouters encounters these issues all the time. Users ask about getting getting Netflix access in a country where it’s not available or streaming European television from anywhere. We always return to the same answer, which is that you’ve got to subscribe to a VPN.

VPNs (or Virtual Private Networks) are subscription-based service designed to offer users the top level of online security. They work as follows: first of all, a user logs into a VPN. Once this is done, all of his or her activity is tunneled through secure servers set up all over the world. Consequently, hackers and snooping governments can no longer access your most sensitive information (emails, credit card numbers). Most VPNs are not free, but they are cheap and utterly necessary.

The Best VPN Service Security Providers 2016

Top VPN Providers

But you might be asking, how does this let me watch Tr3s from anywhere in the world? The answer is quite simple, actually. Log in and choose the encrypted VPN server you prefer. Pick your server, and now you receive an IP address in that server’s location. Now your network is secure and furthermore, your computer believes it’s somewhere that it’s not.

And now you can access any web pages that are available in that country. Want to stream Tr3s from England? Log in to your VPN and pick an American server. VPN protection is that simple, effective, and ingenious.

DD-WRT and Tomato: Which Is the Best Router Firmware?

DD-WRT Logo - Power to the Router

DD-WRT Firmware- Best Router Firmware

FlashRouters takes pride in the quality of service that we bring to our customers, but we wouldn’t be able to do what we do with such consistent results without help from the best router firmware available. In this case, the best comes split in two different forms: DD-WRT and Tomato.

These replacement firmwares boost the functionality of every single FlashRouter immeasurably, and we’re proud to offer devices that benefit from the many advanced features that the best router firmware, DD-WRT and Tomato provide. Of course, while both kinds of open-source firmware offer a lot of the same features, there are considerable differences.

We’re going to explore some of the differences below, in the hope of offering our customers a clearer picture of each open source firmware, and allowing our customers the ability to have a better idea of which is the best router firmware for them.

The Benefits DD-WRT and Tomato Share

As we mentioned above, both DD-WRT and Tomato open source firmware share a lot of virtues; they both allow users to access advanced features like the ability to extend your wireless range, tweak wireless sensitivity, control your bandwidth allocation, and add advanced layers of security that stock firmwares simply can’t provide.

If that was all these firmwares did, they’d be worth the upgrade, but there’s also all of this:

  • Built-in OpenVPN, PPTP, & L2TP Settings which allows you to utilize your VPN subscription with multiple devices as well as popular streaming players like Rokus while saving you the trouble of installing the VPN connection on each single device!
  • Dual WAN and 3G/4G USb Failover options.
  • Major security holes removed like WPS and manufacturer backdoors.
  • Advanced Networking Modes for WDS, Repeaters & Client Bridges
  • Advanced QoS (Quality of Service) which lets you take over the process of allocating your bandwidth for VOIP, streaming service & popular websites.

That’s a whole lot of features, and that’s just what DD-WRT and Tomato have in common.

Now let’s get to the differences…

Tomato Firmware Benefits Unavailable on DD-WRT

To start with, Tomato simply offers better OpenVPN support, allowing you to connect to your work’s VPN with ease or to use with the popular VPN service provider of your choice. In fact, our testing has shown a higher rate of success with Tomato when setting up and connecting with OpenVPN.

Tomato is also noteworthy for having a more user-friendly graphical user interface, and some helpful visual add-ons of connected ethernet devices.  There’s also a wireless survey page that helps users find the best channel to use for a wireless network, and Tomato has recently added a feature that notifies users when updates are available. Tomato has integrated Tor and Bittorrent clients, and even makes USB integration easier.

If you are interested in using two OpenVPN servers side by side, Tomato is a recommended option. Tomato allows for the integration of two OpenVPN servers you can easily switch back and forth from, even if they are from different providers. If you have an IPVanish server that works well in New York, and a NordVPN server you prefer for Los Angeles, there is no need to fear.

Screen Shot 2016-06-24 at 5.01.15 PM 1

Bandwidth Monitoring in Tomato

Tomato is also recommended for bandwidth monitoring use. Tomato offers real time, 24 hour, daily, weekly, and monthly bandwidth monitoring, while DD-WRT only offers real-time bandwidth monitoring. If you have multiple devices on your network, bandwidth monitoring will allow you to see which devices are clogging up your speeds.

The Policy Based Routing setup is also recommended for Tomato users over DD-WRT users. Policy based routing, or the Dual Gateway Setup, is recommended for use with higher-end routers, like the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 Tomato FlashRouter. Using the Dual Gateway with a router like the R7000 will allow you to use the router as both an ISP and a VPN connection. This is advantageous because it allows you to use both the ISP network to get the most out of the R7000’s processor, while also protecting specific devices with a VPN.

DD-WRT Firmware Benefits Unavailable on Tomato

Tomato may have a host of features that you simply cannot find on other kinds of open source firmware, but DD-WRT certainly gives it a run for its money.

One thing DD-WRT has going for it over Tomato is that DD-WRT is more readily available. DD-WRT supports some Atheros-based and Ralink-based chipsets, which means that you can flash DD-WRT on a bigger selection of devices. In fact, manufacturers such as D-Link, TP-Link and more are available with DD-WRT.

Better yet, if you’re interested in wireless repeater modes, DD-WRT has it all over Tomato. DD-WRT offers use of repeaters on alternate subnets, whereas Tomato only has the repeater bridge/WDS.

And if you’re looking to create a WiFi hotspot, DD-WRT has more advanced, built-in options than Tomato, such as Wifidog, Sputnik, and many others.

So Which Is the Best Router Firmware?

We hate to end inconclusively when we’ve promised to answer the question about the best router firmware, but ultimately, it depends on which features are most important to you. If OpenVPN connectivity is your main goal, we’d say go with Tomato. If you’re more concerned with repeater modes, then DD-WRT is the way to go. No matter what feature matters most to you, make sure to check whether DD-WRT or Tomato offers it before you commit to a purchase.

Whatever your preference, we offer plenty of routers featuring both brands of firmware.

Some of our most popular DD-WRT routers include;

Netgear Nighthawk X4S R7800 AC2600 – 1.7 Ghz Broadcom Processor and 4 Antennas

What Is UPnP & How Do I Set it Up UPnP in DD-WRT?

UPnPAs the way we store movies, music, TV shows, etc. grows increasingly sophisticated, we’ve managed to multiply the ways in which we can get frustrated with or lose track of our media. If you want to stream an album stored on your phone through your laptop or PS3, you can drive yourself nuts trying to figure out how to get your gadgets to work together.

Fortunately, there’s a simple feature on your routers that will allow you to sync up your home devices and create an easily accessible library of media. This solution is called UPnP.

What Is UPnP?

UPnP stands for Universal Plug and Play, a feature that allows you to share media stored on different devices all over your network. UPnP-friendly devices include Xbox One, PS4, and even some DVD players, Blu-Ray players and SmartTVs.

So if there’s something on your home computer that you’d like to see on your big screen TV, all you need to do is enable UPnP on your home network (which we will discuss in the section below). No need to re-download files. Just stream them on the UPnP-friendly device of your choice.

How Do I Use UPnP With DD-WRT?

How to set up UPnP in DD-WRT

UPnP in DD-WRT

Now that you know what UPnP is, you’re probably wondering how you go about enabling it…

If you’re one of the fortunate people with a powerful router upgraded with the endlessly versatile firmware known as DD-WRT, then the process of turning on your UPnP is remarkably simple.

Looking for a DD-WRT router? FlashRouters offers a great variety of routers specifically flashed with DD-WRT, from the user favorites like the Linksys WRT1200AC DD-WRT Router to the powerhouse  Netgear R7000 AC1900 Nighthawk.

First, you need to start by logging in to your router on your browser (the default LAN IP address of a DD-WRT router is 192.168.1.1). You should see a screen like the one above.

Click on the NAT/QoS tab. Once you’ve done that, click on the UPnP tab right below. Then you’ve just got to click “Enable” next to the UPnP service line.

And that’s it! Your home network and the devices using it are now UPnP-enabled. Start streaming YouTube videos on your big screen TV and iTunes through your home theater system!

The latest FlashRouter - The TP-Link Archer C9 AC1900 DD-WRT

TP-Link Archer C9 AC1900 (Back)

For those looking for the light colored high-end DD-WRT router, the TP-Link Archer C9 DD-WRT is the only device that is not black. That does matter to a few of you out there we know. And we haven’t even started talking about the Wireless-AC…

The Advantages of Wireless-AC

Put simply, there’s Wireless-G, Wireless-N, and Wireless-AC. Of those, Wireless-AC is the one you want, as this primer helps explain in further detail.

The primary appeal is Wireless-AC is networking speed. This networking draft leaves its competitors in the dust, beating Wireless-G (up to 54 Mbps) and Wireless-N (450-900 Mbps) handily. This particular dual-band device tops out at 1900 Mbps (450Mbps Wireless-N + 1450 Mbps Wireless-AC). So the max transmission speed is minimally 2x the highest end Wireless-N device and about 20x older Wireless-G routers you might still be struggling with.

TP-LINK Archer C9 AC1900 DD-WRT FlashRouter Features

As we’ve demonstrated, the TP-Link Archer C9 is a remarkable device, no matter what you do to it. Yet the router does not reach its full potential until it’s flashed with DD-WRT, a replacement firmware that immeasurably improves upon the stock firmware of every router it graces.

If you’ve suffered through skips, stalls, freezes, and all manner of annoying interruptions while streaming videos on YouTube, movies on Netflix Instant, TV shows on Amazon Instant etc. then you need a router flashed with DD-WRT firmware. Watch as these persistent issues become a thing of the past now that you’ve got a DD-WRT FlashRouter.

But that’s just the beginning of DD-WRT’s virtues…

As you can see, a DD-WRT upgrade is an absolute must if you want a wireless network that is strong, fast, and versatile. Anything less is a compromise.

What is a VLAN & How to Setup VLANs in DD-WRT (Router FAQ)

At FlashRouters, our primary goal is to inform users of what they can do if they decide to take control back of their network and learn more about what their router does. From VPN (Virtual Private Network) integration to QoS (Quality of Service) to DNSMasq & Bandwidth Monitoring/Access controls, DD-WRT is a feature laden firmware alternative ready to maximize your router capabilities and performance.

In this post, we will explore a very popular feature most commonly found in alternative firmwares like DD-WRT called VLAN or VLAN tagging.

What is VLAN (Virutal LAN)?

According to Wikipedia,”In computer networking, a single layer-2 network may be partitioned to create multiple distinct broadcast domains, which are mutually isolated so that packets can only pass between them via one or more routers; such a domain is referred to as a virtual local area network, virtual LAN or VLAN… More sophisticated devices can mark packets through tagging, so that a single interconnect (trunk) may be used to transport data for multiple VLANs…”

Basically a VLAN is a method of created separate networks on the same router for security and segmentation purposes. VLAN setup is a useful procedure if you have some devices on your network that you want to isolate from other devices like multiple guest networks for family friends or office visitors. Provide Internet access with a VLAN without giving them access to your entire network. The settings can easily be changed and adapted to however you want the network to be setup.

VLAN Benefits

A VLAN has the same attributes as a physical local area network (LAN), but it allows for devices to be grouped together more easily even if they are not on the same network switch. Most enterprise-level networks today use the virtual LANs.

Without VLAN functionality, this setup would require a separate, a collection of network cables and equipment separate from the primary network that would be costly and create the need for wiring an entire home or office again. Unlike physically separate networks, VLANs share bandwidth, so VLAN trunks may require aggregated links and/or quality of service prioritization for maximizing the capability.

For many users, VLAN alone is a enough of a reason to switch to third-party alternative firmware, but you can read the Intro to DD-WRT for more.

How to Setup VLAN in DD-WRT

Netgear R7000 Nighthawk - Wireless-AC Router

Netgear R7000 AC1900 Nighthawk DD-WRT

Now on to the fun!

In this DD-WRT tutorial, we will setup VLANs for each Ethernet port. This will create a network on each port that is isolated from all the other ports. An Asus RT-AC66U has been used for this tutorial but this same interface is pretty constant throughout any popular DD-WRT enhanced router like the Netgear Nighthawk R7000 AC1900.

VLAN Configuration of Ports 1-4

Go to https://192.168.1.1/ (or your router management IP address) in your web browser.

Select Setup -> VLANs.

Uncheck ports 1, 2, 3, and 4. Place port 1 into VLAN1, port 2 into VLAN2, and port 3 into VLAN3, port 4 into VLAN4. Set the WAN port to VLAN0.

When this is done, the VLAN configuration page should look like this.

VLAN-howto 1 vlan setup

Click Save, then Apply Settings.

VLAN-howto 2 apply vlan settings

VLAN Configuration on Each Port

  1. Next, plug an Ethernet cable into port 1 on the router from your computer.
  2. Unplug the router power for 30 seconds and then plug it back in. Wait for the lights to return to normal.
  3. Go to Setup -> Networking.

In this tutorial, we will create a subnet for each VLAN.

VLAN1 will have the subnet 192.168.1.0. VLAN2 will have the subnet 192.168.2.0. VLAN3 will have the subnet 192.168.3.0. VLAN4 will have the subnet 192.168.4.0.

That means devices on VLAN1 will be assigned addresses such as 192.168.1.15 and for VLAN2 192.168.2.50

VLAN-howto 3 port setup assignment

Under Port Setup set VLAN1 to Unbridged.

Set the IP Address to 192.168.1.1. Set the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0

Change VLAN2 to Unbridged.

Set the IP Address to 192.168.2.1. Set the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0

Change VLAN3 to Unbridged.

Set the IP Address to 192.168.3.1. Set the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0

Change set VLAN4 to Unbridged.

Set the IP Address to 192.168.4.1. Set the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0

Save your changes by clicking Save. When the interface responds, the Port Setup section should look like this.

VLAN-howto 4 port setup assignment 2

Below the Port Setup area you will see a section titled DHCPD.

What this area does is allow you to create multiple automatic assignment addresses for IP addresses in a network. So whenever someone authenticates into this section, this VLAN will assign it a user address in your network. This is create 4 sets of automatic assignments within the 4 new segments of your network to be handled by the router automatically in the future.

Under DHCPD click Add. Set DHCP 0 to vlan0 with a Leasetime of 1440 (24 hours). Click Save.

Click Add again. Set DHCP 1 to vlan1 with a Leasetime of 1440 (24 hours). Click Save.

Under DHCPD Click Add. Set DHCP 2 to vlan2 with a Leasetime of 1440 (24 hours). Click Save.

Once again, Once again,Set DHCP 3 to vlan3 with a Leasetime of 1440 (24 hours). Click Save.

And a final time, click Add. Set DHCP 4 to vlan4 with a Leasetime of 1440 (24 hours).

Click Save. Let it save. Then, click Apply Settings.

Once completed, the DHCPD -> Mutliple DHCP Server section should look like this:

VLAN-howto 5 multiple dhcp servers

Plug your Ethernet cable into any port on the router aside from port 4 or the WAN port. Unplug the power for 30 seconds and then plug it back in. Wait for the lights to return to normal.

Adding Firewall Rules to Isolate the VLANs.

Now we have created 4 network segments but we need to use a firewall to fully isolate them from each other. These commands block all VLANs from communication with each other.

Browse to Administration -> Commands.

Copy and paste the following commands into the Commands text box:

iptables -I  FORWARD -s 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 -j DROP
iptables -I  FORWARD -s 192.168.2.0/255.255.255.0 -j DROP
iptables -I  FORWARD -s 192.168.3.0/255.255.255.0 -j DROP
iptables -I  FORWARD -s 192.168.4.0/255.255.255.0 -j DROP

Click “Save Firewall”.

VLAN-howto 6 firewall commands

Your DD-WRT VLAN basic configuration is now complete.

Testing the VLAN DD-WRT Setup

To test each VLAN, connect to that wireless network and port. Take note of your IP address and seeing if your local IP address changes in your network. If it changes you have correctly setup VLANs, great job!
