While Russia has been slacking on the ban on VPNs, Turkey is stepping it up. Under the regime of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, there have been reports of the introduction of a Turkey VPN ban.
Different Reports On Turkey’s VPN Block Proposals
Currently, it is not clear on whether the Turkey VPN ban is already in place or still in testing. According to the Diken news portal, the VPN block is already in place. This source states that many providers are already unavailable. The list of blocked providers includes Tor Project, ExpressVPN, Private Internet Access, IPVanish, TunnelBear, VyprVPN, and Hotspot Shield.
Diken News’ report seems to be premature, but it is obvious that President Erdoğan’s regime is planning on going through with the ban. One expert from the Turkish Telecommunications Authority, or BTK, confirms these speculations.
In a presentation to a Turkish Parliamentary Commission, Levent Gönenç of the BTK admitted that they are testing a system to implement a Turkey VPN ban. Gönenç claims that the BTK is planning a new round of tests.
This could mean that these plans are either in very early stages, or the initial tests by BTK failed and a new approach must be implemented.
Regardless, the plan to ban VPNs in Turkey is very real. And if you are looking to use a VPN provider, you would be advised to do some research about their efficacy in this region.
How Will Turkey Implement A VPN Ban?
This is a common question that is brought up when governments or companies attempt to ban VPNs.
In many instances, companies like Netflix have attempted to ban VPNs by blocking individual server IP addresses. Although this technique works, it is very easy for VPN providers to change the IP addresses or even mask them.
On the other hand, the United Arab Emirates, or UAE, has implemented a full-blown VPN ban. This prevents citizens from speaking their voice and spreading ideas, much like the goal of the Turkey VPN ban.
