Since 2012, our friends in the UK have had a significant advantage over everyone else in the streaming media game, but we’ll show you how to even things out…
Launched by BSkyB in 2012, Now TV collects the best from the worlds of movies, television, and sports, and presents them all in one simple, affordable package.
As of this past year, there’s a Now TV box, which brings all of these channels under one roof. It’s easy to hook up, and cheap (as low as 9.99 pounds). Otherwise, Now TV is viewable on your PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox®360, Roku, YouView, LG Smart TV, PC or Mac, Mobile*, Tablet and more.
So what do you get in the individual sections? We’re glad you asked…
Now TV Movies
Now TV movies has over 800 movies that you can choose to watch at any time for 8.99 pounds a month, including the recently added Gravity, and with the promise of 16 new features added each month. Upcoming features from Now TV movies include Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, American Hustle, and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.
Now TV Entertainment
Technically, this is Now TV Television, but since that title would be unforgivably redundant, they’ve gone with Now TV Entertainment.
And we can’t fault them for that, since there is a lot of entertainment to be had in this category. Popular shows like Hannibal and Scandal coexist with kids shows from Nickelodeon and The Disney Channel, as well as informative and exciting documentaries from The Discovery Channel. All for 4.99 pounds a month.
Now TV Sports
Since Now TV is affiliated with Sky Sports, if you’re a Now TV user, you can sign up for a Sky Sports pass for as little as 6.99 pounds a month.
That means soccer (or Football), Formula 1 racing, cricket, golf, tennis, and many more activities and games are all at your fingertips with the help of Now TV.
Watch Now TV Outside the UK With a VPN
Now TV is not available outside of the UK, which is unfortunate for those of us who live anywhere else.
But fear not, non-Anglos, and UK people who are outside of their native country for business or vacation, there’s a way to enjoy Now TV from anywhere in the world: it’s called a VPN.
A VPN service (or Virtual Private Network Service) is a subscription-based service that offers users an easy way to secure their networks and all of the sensitive information (e-mails, credit card numbers) on it. When you log in to a VPN, all of your online activity is tunneled through encrypted servers set up all over the world, thus ensuring that hackers, identity thieves, and snooping governments are unable to access your information.
What does that have to do with Now TV and accessing it outside the UK? Well, when you log in, you’re given the ability to choose what encrypted server you’d like to use, and when you pick a server, you’re assigned a new IP address. Pick a server in another country, and you’ll get an IP address in another country, which will make your computer thing you’re in that country.
So all you have to do is pick a UK-based server, which will give you a UK-based IP address, and you’ll be streaming Now TV from the US or China or anywhere else in the world you happen to be. It’s that simple.
FlashRouters supports tons of fantastic VPNs, and if you’re looking for a good one, we suggest checking out our official supported provider list. That said, popular VPNs for UK-based IP address include HideMyAss, IPVanish, PrivateInternetAccess, and Overplay. Tell ’em FlashRouters sent ya.
Enjoy Now TV With a FlashRouter
Now that you’ve got your Now TV and VPN subscription all in order, there’s only one thing left to do: get your wireless network in order.
And for that, you’re gonna need a FlashRouter.
At FlashRouters, we sell devices that are designed to future-proof your wireless network. By flashing all of our routers with DD-WRT or Tomato firmware, we ensure that every customer receives a top-notch device loaded features that your average router just can’t touch. Extend your wireless range, access advanced security options, and even control how your bandwidth is allocated with a FlashRouter.
Better still, a FlashRouter even improves your VPN experience. If you’re subscribed to any VPN on our official supported provider list, we’ll send your FlashRouter completely set up to work with your VPN right out of the box! Hold on to your old router, and you’ll be able to use our popular dual router setup, which allows you to have a dedicated VPN router and a dedicated local router that you can switch between with ease.
You can’t go wrong with any FlashRouter, but if you want to get a better idea of what we offer, we suggest taking a look at our best DD-WRT routers of 2014 list. There’s almost certainly something there for you, from remarkable and thoroughly affordable devices like the Linksys E1200 to the Asus RT-AC68U, a networking powerhouse that features blinding speeds. Then there’s the R7000 Nighthawk, which blows all of its competition out of the water without breaking a sweat.
