At FlashRouters, we’ve got plenty of high-end devices loaded up with complicated features to make your network as versatile and protected as possible.
But if you’re trying to keep things simple and manageable, all the while ensuring a smooth and safe online experience, we’ve got plenty to offer for those needs as well.
Two of these basic, inexpensive, but still excellent, routers that leap to mind when it comes to meeting that criteria are the Cisco Linksys E2500, and the brand new E1200 Tomato FlashRouter. These routers have all the tools to give you more control over your network without all of the fancy bells and whistles. That’s why we call them “The Basics.” The E1200 is our most popular single band device and the E2500 is our lowest priced dual band device.
And that’s why we’re happy to offer you a deal THIS WEEKEND ONLY that makes the wonderfully inexpensive devices even more affordable.
What Is the Difference Between DD-WRT & Tomato Firmware?
While we happily endorse all of our fantastic DD-WRT routers, there are most certainly reasons to opt for Tomato routers over DD-WRT routers. Compare DD-WRT & Tomato in our info area or if you prefer some visuals, or watch our open-source router Channel on YouTube that highlight the popular features of each firmware.
DD-WRT is a more popular and well-known firmware that supports a large array of devices. DD-WRT works on Broadcom & Atheros processors with Linksys, Asus, Netgear, TP-LINK, Airlink, D-Link and more.. DD-WRT routers tend to have better functionality for Wireless Repeater & Client Bridge modes. They also feature more integrated support for creating WiFi Hotspots, and offer PPTP & L2TP support.
Tomato firmware, on the other hand, is more focused on a small subsection of devices (primarily Tomato is basically only widely on Linksys, Asus, & Netgear), but where Tomato applies itself, it performs beautifully. It has a simpler and more-user friendly user interface, as well as OpenVPN, PPTP, and L2TP support for clients and servers. For more details about the benefits of Tomato firmware, feel free to peruse our Tomato router primer here.
The E1200 and E2500 Tomato Routers
As we mentioned above, these routers are low-cost and no-frills. For right around $100, you get a beautiful Tomato router that takes the default Linksys firmware and upgrades it, adding VPN connectivity, improved stability, wireless repeater & client bridge functionality for extending the reach of your wireless network (the E1200 V2 Tomato now adds OpenVPN option, so for that added support, the E1200 Tomato is $10 more than E1200 DD-WRT).
If you don’t need a mega processor, or USB ports, or gigabit ports, then these routers are just the perfect networking devices for you.
Do I Need VPN To Use a FlashRouter?
Frequently, we are asked if our routers require VPN service, since most of our products include a drop-down option when you add an item to your card. The answer is of course not.
Our routers are flashed with advanced firmware to meet the wide swath of desires and needs of many different niches, while also providing an advanced feature-set missing in store-bought devices. You won’t necessarily need every, single feature, the starting difference for all of our routers is superior stability. Our routers are primed to perform and be stable for months and years on end. No more rebooting and resetting everyday. No more connectivity issues for different operating systems, as you often see with generic routers.
Adding VPN service to your network adds a level of security and encryption to all of your activities, and at FlashRouters, we proudly support many VPN providers, including HideMyAss, IPVanish, ExpressVPN, Overplay, PrivateInternetAccess, IVPN, VPNSecure.me, VyprVPN, and others. With FlashRouters, you choose the most trustworthy provider that best suits your needs, and we’ll make sure that it can be fully integrated into your network, allowing any device in your home to have the added benefit of advanced privacy and security.
