A new Vietnamese internet law, named Decree 72, would restrict the sort of information that can be exchanged and posted on blogs and social media, PCWorld reports.
The law says that information that “harms national security” or “opposes” the government is to be banned. Critics suspect that this law is designed to silence critics of the Vietnamese government, which has already jailed a few oppositional bloggers in recent months.
The Freedom Online Coalition, a coalition made up of officials from the governments of the US, UK, Germany, and France, among many others, were swift in their condemnation of this oppressive law, saying they are “deeply concerned” and that Decree 72 “appears to be inconsistent with Vietnam’s obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, as well as its commitments under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”
Use VPNs to Bypass Decree 72
Hopefully, with the help of a strong international outcry, Decree 72 will be defeated before it goes into effect on September 1st. Assuming it goes into effect, FlashRouters is happy to reassure our Vietnamese friends that there are simple steps they can take to get around this unjust law using VPN.
All it really takes is subscribing to a VPN service provider. Using a VPN service, or Virtual Private Network service, you can access geographically restricted material from all over the world. VPNs encrypt their users information by tunneling them through secure servers set up all over the globe, so if you log into your VPN account, you can change your IP address to one belonging to a country with lax social media and blogging laws.
Don’t let your government restrict your access to a free and open internet. Use a VPN service to secure your personal, online information safe and your web experience unmonitored and unconstrained. Popular VPN service providers include IPVanish VPN, ExpressVPN, HideMyAss VPN, and PrivateInternetAccess VPN. FlashRouters also offers a new VPN provider comparison list to help you find the virtual private network that best suits your needs.
