Best Apps/Sites For Finding Specific Streaming Movies & TV Shows

Can I Stream It?

Can I

With all of the streaming services available these days, it can be difficult to track down just the right show or just the right movie. After all, you might end up paying for a streaming movie or TV show on Vudu or Amazon Instant, only to find out that it was available on Netflix Instant the whole time.

We’ve found ourselves in this position time and time again, and we’ve wished there were some sites or apps that corralled all of the pertinent information from these services and made the process of finding your streaming movie or TV show of choice a simple matter of searching.

Well, wishing for an app centered around convenience occasionally seems to conjure them up. As it turns out, there are a small, but growing, number of services designed to help people looking for streaming movies and TV see straight amid the dense thicket of options. We’re going to talk about a few of them today, and you can see if one or all of them are right for you.

Let’s start with the app with a title that gets right to the point: Can I is absolutely comprehensive in the way they allow users to search. You can hunt for streaming movies and TV through all of the usual sites, like Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime Instant, SnagFilms, Crackle, etc, but that’s not all. Your search will also return Digital Rental options, Digital Purchase options (iTunes, Vudu), Disc Purchase/Rental options, and even XFinity/Cable options. even goes to the trouble of recommending popular and new titles on Netflix Instant, HBO GO, Amazon Instant Video, and Amazon DVD. Presented in a simple, clean, and easy to navigate interface, so for professionalism, clarity of purpose, and an exhaustive database, Can I is the website & iPhone/Android app to beat.

Formerly Fanhattan, Fan is considerably flashier than Can I, but that’s probably because they have grander ambitions (check out their upcoming, Roku-like, device called Fan TV, if you don’t believe us).

In the meantime, Fan offers pretty much everything Can I offers (the ability to find out where streaming movies and TV shows are available) in a considerably slicker package and interface. Fan also has a wider range of recommendations and a selection of movie trailers, as well as interesting featured sections with names like “News and Inspiration” and “The Fan 100” (a list of their favorite 100 movies).

With Fan can even add a list of films you have seen or want to see and it will alert you when they are available. For fans of list-making, Fan also allows you to make lists to share with friends that will integrate how people can actually watch the movie. And we have to say that the iPad app is very responsive and highly intuitive and interactive. A movie fan or lover can spend hours at a time updated watched lists based on actors, directors, screenwriters and much more. I would write more but I have to get back to making some lists.

So if you prefer an app that serves its’ purpose and does so with some pizzazz, why not check Fan out?

And we conclude with the simplest streaming media service scourer. Look, just navigating Netflix Instant can be a bit of a chore in and of itself, and many cord-cutters and fans of streaming movies & TV find that Netflix is the only site they need. And it’s with that in mind that we present Instantwatcher.

Instantwatcher is focused on one thing and one thing only; alerting you to what’s available on Netflix Instant. Netflix Instant is a wonderful resource, but it can be a bit of a pain delineating between what’s available to stream and what’s merely available to rent especially since Netflix is constantly pushing their most popular titles for your viewing pleasure. Discovery used to be Netflix’s best capability but now it is hidden behind a maze of fancy displays.

Instantwatcher simplifies that process by jettisoning the rental material, and letting you know what’s new to the site, or just what’s available on Netflix Instant in general. You can even search by an actor or actresses name (alas, there is no “Expiring Soon” feature anymore, as Netflix has decided to not make that information public).

Find out what movies and shows are just waiting to join your queue by heading over to Instantwatcher!
