Spring has finally pulled back winter’s grey curtain. It’s time to finally put away those heavy coats and enjoy the fruits of the season.

You might be thinking that there’s no need to update your network during these, the outdoors months, but there are still plenty of good reasons to make sure that your wireless connection is as reliable as ever.

As we’ve mentioned in recent posts, it’s baseball season! And what better way to ensure that your experience is as fluid as possible than by consulting our list of bestselling WiFi routers and most popular VPN services.

Those of you who are less sports-oriented have reasons to keep your network current as well. After all, there is a new season of Mad Men underway. If you’ve cut the cord on your cable bill, as so many have, you wouldn’t want your Vudu stream compromised in the middle of an episode of the new AMC classic.

Similarly, the third season of Game of Thrones has only just begun, and you wouldn’t want your HBO GO channel to stall in the middle of some crucial Machiavellian machinations.

These are just a few of many reasons you’re going to want to have your network optimized during the upcoming months. Find out which of our WiFi routers and services are the most popular and effective by reading on!

The FlashRouters Difference

All of our WiFi routers are flashed with DD-WRT or Tomato firmware, both of which are replacement firmwares designed to vastly improve upon the stock firmware that comes with your WiFi router.

You can attempt to install these firmwares on your own, but it’s a tricky and time-consuming process, one that can leave you with a “bricked” (read: useless) router at the end of it. So why not save yourself the trouble and money and trust our specialists to handle the hassle for you? And believe us, you’re going to want your WiFi router to run off one of these firmwares.

DD-WRT and Tomato firmware offer much that your average router’s firmware overlook or leave out:

  • Adjustable antenna capabilities which allow you to boost the strength of your wireless signal.
  • Advanced Networking Modes for WDS, Repeaters & Client Bridges.
  • Advanced QoS (Quality of Service) which lets you take over the process of allocating your bandwidth for VOIP, streaming service & popular websites.
  • Captive WiFi Hotspot Portals.
  • Built-in OpenVPN, PPTP, & L2TP Settings which allows you to utilize your VPN subscription with multiple devices as well as popular streaming players like Rokus while saving you the trouble of installing the VPN connection on each single device!

A Brief Introduction to VPNs

We made mention of VPN’s throughout this article without totally explaining what it is that a VPN provides, so before we get to the list of the most popular VPN’s, first a quick tutorial.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a subscription-based service that provides your online identity with an extra, impenetrable level of security. These services encrypt your information by tunneling your data flow through their secure servers based all around the world.

A VPN will also protect your online identity by masking and allowing you to change your IP address to one in any country of your choice. Aside from providing another layer of security, this allows you to trick your computer into thinking that it’s in a country it isn’t in, meaning you can access regionally restricted material. So if you’re in England, and you want to watch, just log into your VPN account, choose an American-based IP address, and you’ll be streaming a Yankee game from London before you know it.

Most Requested VPN Service Provider Setups of March 2013

Once again, Overplay VPN has taken the top slot on VPN Providers list; no surprise, given the level of quality service Overplay provides. Overplay features high-speed OpenVPN, PPTP, & L2TP VPN servers in over 6o countries, as well as simple DD-WRT integration and reliable speeds and service.

  1. HideMyAss (HMA) – Excellent US server selection.
  2. IPVanish – Offers some of the fastest server speeds worldwide.
  3. PrivateInternetAccess – The excellent, economy VPN service.

What’s more, accessing Overplay’s VPN service is simple and intuitive. Just log into your router, go to the MyPage, and before you know it, you’ll have access to servers all over the world!

Of course, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention any of the other providers on the list, such as second-place winner HideMyAss (HMA) VPN. HideMyAss certainly is a strong competitor to Overplay, offering even better American-based coverage, but Overplay’s MyPage integration is enough to give it the edge for our beginner and novice users looking for easy integration of VPN service for watching Netflix on their Rokus.

IPVanish & PrivateInternetAccess have increasingly become strong contenders especially with our recent addition of PrivateInternetAccess specific DD-WRT & Tomato routers.

Of course, what good would a FlashRouter and VPN service be without a Roku or some other streaming device with which to properly take advantage of the advanced service? After all, with a FlashRouter, you can integrate several devices into one VPN account. Just makes sense to make the most of it.
