Where Are The Best Streaming Independent Films Online?
We love Netflix Instant the same as anyone else, but let’s face it, they cater to as populist of an audience as possible.
Certainly, it has led Netflix to be the most popular streaming film service around. Most of the time, Netflix offers the types of television shows and movies viewers prefer, but if our film buff inner voice it has one complaint it is the limited selection and narrow focus of Netflix Instant’s Independent film category especially when it comes to international releases.
Don’t get us wrong. Netflix Instant’s catalog has some great options like Lukas Moodysson’s Together or Giorgos Lanthimos’ unremittingly disturbing Dogtooth or Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia, but those only scratches the surface of what worldwide independent film has to offer.
So you might be wondering; is there a streaming service that is committed to offering exclusively eclectic and limited independent films? Indeed, there is. It’s called Fandor.
What Is Fandor?
Fandor is a subscription-based service dedicated to making it possible for you, the independent film lover, to have access to an incredible library of otherwise impossible to locate independent film ranging from the classic, to the obscure, to the outre, to the informative, and beyond.
For a mere $10 a month, Fandor offers an “experience with curation in mind, to take the hard work out of finding great movies.” Every film in their tremendous catalog is selected with the utmost care, meaning you won’t find a dud in the bunch. And if you’re worried about missing out on the experience of discovering movies on your own, Fandor alleviates that problem by providing “the tools and insights you need to explore and make your own great discoveries.”
Most importantly, Fandor is devoted to independent film and their hardworking indie visionaries. makers in ways beyond providing a platform for their work to be viewed. For every two dollars Fandor earns, one dollar goes right back to indie filmmakers and distributors.
How to Access or Unblock Fandor Outside the USA?
As is often the case with streaming film and media services, USA is the chosen one when it comes to availability. Fandor is a great service but is restricted to users with US IP address. The answer to this quandary for independent film lovers of the world is a VPN service.
A VPN service provider is also a subscription-based service, one with an altogether different purpose than Fandor. VPN providers are devoted to creating a secure and private Internet use by encrypting the connection and tunneling the information through servers around the world.
Popular VPN services for US IP addresses include Overplay VPN, HideMyAss VPN, IPVanish VPN, PrivateInternetAccess, and StrongVPN. FlashRouters also offers a handy VPN service comparison list to help you find the VPN service that best suits your needs.

This means that you can be in Germany, and make your computer think it’s down under in Australia.
A popular benefit of using VPN service is that you can access regionally restricted material. So if you’re out of the US on vacation or on business, and you want to access your Fandor account, all you have to do is log in to your VPN service, and choose an American-based IP address. You’ll be awash in ‘70s cult films before you know it.
A Few Friendly Fandor Film Recommendations
So you’ve got a FlashRouter , a VPN account, a HD streaming media player, and your Fandor subscription. Time to sit down on the couch and enjoy the fruits of your labor. You deserve it!
Fandor offers plenty of recommendations catered to their viewers, but we’re big indie film fans here at FlashRouters, so we couldn’t resist the urge to mention a few of our favorites (particularly movies not available on Netflix Instant). Enjoy!
The Most Dangerous Game – Based on the short story by Richard Connell, The Most Dangerous Game tells the story of a murderous hunter (Leslie Banks) who causes a shipwreck so that he may hunt the people marooned on his island. Campy and thrilling and scary.
Vampyr – This early horror classic from Carl Theodor Dreyer is most famous for it’s stunning, eerie imagery and nightmarish atmosphere. Not to be missed.
The Blue Angel – Emil Jannings gives a wonderfully blustery performance in this classic, about a professor who’s life turns to shambles after he falls in love with a nightclub singer, but really, it’s a showcase for the hypnotic powers of Marlene Dietrich.
The Day of the of Triffids – It’s hard to resist a good ole’ fashioned, silly, sci-fi classic from the early ’60s, and The Day of the Triffids – about a meteor shower that blinds almost everyone, and allows killer plants to roam free and attack people – is about as good as those get.
Brian Eno: The Man Who Fell to Earth – Okay,we actually haven’t seen this one yet, but we’re big Brian Eno fans around this office – from his days as a glam-rock pioneer in Roxy Music, to his art-pop albums of the ’70s, to his ambient works, to his producing classic David Bowie and Talking Heads albums, respectively – so we’re going to include this one as a reminder to ourselves to watch it.
