Best New Movies to Rent/Stream/Own – The Master

Considering the glut of services that allow you to stream media, it can be a little disorienting trying to figure out what to watch.

Even if you know exactly what movie you’re looking for, picking the right streaming video outlet for the best new streaming movies can be tricky. You could find yourself paying for something on Vudu that’s already available to stream on Netflix Instant.

The purpose of this post, and subsequent posts like it, is to keep you apprised of where the movies you want to watch are available, whether on streaming outlets for which you pay a monthly subscription (Netflix Instant, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video), or on pay-per-stream services (Vudu, iTunes, Amazon Prime).

Best New Movies to Rent/Own

The Master – To sum up everything worthwhile about this movie in a glib post would do a great disservice to its boundless complexity and the brilliant direction, writing, score, performances etc. contained within. Paul Thomas Anderson’s supposed “Scientology” movie is a piece destined to fascinate through the ages.

Available on: Amazon Instant Video, iTunes, Vudu

Best New Movies to Rent/Stream/Own - The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2

Best New Movies to Rent/Stream/Own – The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 The grand finale of the impossibly popular series brings Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner together for one more round of brooding werewolves and glittery vampires.

Available on: Amazon Instant Video, iTunes, Vudu

Sinister – Well-reviewed horror films are a rarity, so even though the plot of this one begs the old “why don’t they just move out of the haunted house IMMEDIATELY after horrible things start happening?” question, it’s worth checking out nonetheless. Sinister stars Ethan Hawke as a true-crime writer who moves his family into a house that’s also the setting of a murder. Again, we know your problem with the logic. We get it, but just watch it.

Available on: Amazon Instant Video, iTunes, Vudu

Anna Karenina – Director Joe Wright (Atonement, Hanna) has a good track record, as does writer Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare In Love, Brazil), which makes this adaptation of the classic Tolstoy novel incredibly intriguing. Adding Jude Law and Keira Knightley to the mix doesn’t hurt matters either.

Available on: Amazon Instant Video, iTunes, Vudu

Best New Movies to Rent/Stream/Own – Life of Pi

Life of Pi Ang Lee’s win for Best Director at Sunday’s Academy Awards most assuredly gives this already well-respected movie even more clout. The story of a young man lost at sea with a Bengal tiger, Life of Pi has captivated audiences with its gorgeous imagery and epic scope.

Available on: Amazon Instant Video, iTunes, Vudu

Holy Motors My personal choice for film of 2012, Holy Motors is an indescribably creative, bizarre, and even moving look at one man (Denis Lavant, in maybe the performance of the year) who must attend to a list of appointments, each more inscrutable than the last. Do not miss this one.

Available on:  iTunes

Hitchcock – Though critics weren’t too kind to this one, what movie fan would skip the opportunity to watch Anthony Hopkins play the late, great Alfred Hitchcock?

Available on: Amazon Instant Video, iTunes, Vudu

Game of Thrones: The Complete Second Season – For the few of us who’ve only seen the first season and just may be crazy enough to try and watch the whole second one before the third one premieres on Match 31st, we haven’t a moment to waste!

Available on: Amazon Instant Streaming, iTunes, Vudu

Best New Movies to Stream Online

Most of these options are also available to stream for a fee from sites like Vudu and iTunes, but we’re limiting this section to subscription sites that offer some free streaming like Netflix Instant and Amazon Prime.

How to Survive A Plague – Since the Academy Awards are still fresh in our minds, how about starting with a pair of feature-length nominees for Best Documentary? How to Survive a Plague may not have taken the prize (Searching For Sugar Man was the winner, and a deserving one at that), but this powerful film earned its nomination with its thorough and passionate recounting of the crusade to bring AIDS awareness into the public consciousness in the ’80s and ’90s.

Available on: Netflix Instant

Five Broken Cameras – Another one that didn’t take home the prize the other night, this moving documentary shows the struggles of a Palestinian farming village that tries to counter the efforts of Israeli settlers through non-violent means.

Available on: Netflix Instant

Best New Movies to Stream - The Imposter

Best New Movies to Stream – The Imposter

The Imposter – This documentary didn’t get any Academy Award nominations, but it’s still a fascinating story about a missing San Antonio boy who possibly “reappears” three years later as a considerably older boy with a French accent.

Available on: Netflix Instant

Louis CK: Live at the Beacon Theater – Louis CK has been churning out such consistently hilarious, profound material since being anointed the comic of his time that when he doesn’t quite meet those ridiculously high standards, you notice. Live at the Beacon Theater may be the weakest of his four comedy hours (the others being Shameless, Chewed Up, and Hilarious), but that’s hardly a knock. You’ll want to watch this anyway.

Available on: Netflix Instant

Safety Not Guaranteed –Though there are certainly elements of this movie, about a sarcastic writer sent to uncover the story behind a classified ad looking for a time-traveling companion, that are overly arch and precious, Aubrey Plaza makes a winning lead and Mark Duplass makes his potential lunatic surprisingly soulful.

Available on: Netflix Instant
