Roku Tips: Stream Spotify on Your Roku Player

We touched upon this a little in a previous post, but there’s been some exciting news of late for people who own Rokus and Spotify accounts. Actually, you’re gonna want to own both to take full advantage of this news.

On December 20th, 2012, the Roku blog announced that Spotify, the increasingly prevalent streaming music service, would be available at the Roku Channel Store.

What does this mean for a Roku owner/Spotify user? Whether you are a free user (one who streams a limited amount for no charge), an unlimited user (one who pays $4.99 a month for unlimited streaming), or a premium user (one who can listen and download anything on Spotify, on any device, at any time for $9.99 a month), you can now listen to Spotify’s remarkable library of streaming music directly through your favorite Roku streaming devices.

If you don’t have a Roku, sounds like you might want to get one. Roku is quickly expanding its Roku Channel Store to add a bounty of popular streaming services to be quickly and easily utilized through its crisp, clean and simple interface. And you are in luck, because fortunately we have the latest Roku 2 XS available right now.

What Is Spotify?

Since launching in late 2008, Spotify has seen its user-ship expand rapidly. As of December 2012, Spotify announced that it has twenty million users, five million of which are paid subscribers.

There’s a reason that Spotify has made such an indelible mark so soon quickly: it boasts a library of legal streaming music that is simply unmatched. Whether your tastes lean towards the popular, the obscure, or even the local favorites, you’re likely to find your favorite music available for free streaming (or paid streaming, or paid download, depending on which Spotify streaming music package you prefer).

Once you’ve activated your Spotify account, you are given a six-month, free trial period during which there are no restrictions on your streaming. After the six-month trial period expires, you can choose between the options listed above.

Using Spotify & Rokus with a VPN Service

Though Spotify has been added to the Roku channel store, at the moment, this option is only available in the United States, the United Kingdom and Ireland. More than likely, that will change before too long.

Spotify is one of many streaming music channels available on your Roku, alongside several other streaming movie and television options. If you do not have a US/UK IP address, using a personal VPN provider (OverplayHideMyAssIPVanish) integrated into a DD-WRT FlashRouter allows you constant access to high quality US & UK streaming music and video content through a Roku.
