Our goal with this blog series is to let you in on some of our favorite free movie streaming sites that you may not know about and maybe even to suggest a few good titles for you to enjoy. Previously, we discussed Free Movies on Crackle. Today, I’m going to dig into a more niche service called SnagFilms.
SnagFilms features a diverse slate of more than 10,000 titles that may not ring a bell but are definitely worth watching. Their library primarily features older and hard-to-find independent, classic films & foreign titles alongside a wide array of feature-length and short documentary and musical films. Keep reading to get a list of some of the best free movies and documentaries to watch on SnagFilms.
How to Watch SnagFilms From Outside the USA
SnagFilms is a US-based service whose movies are only available to those inside the or with a US IP address. If you are outside the US and wish to use SnagFilms, you will need a VPN Service Provider with US-based IP addresses such as NordVPN, HideMyAss, IPVanish, and PrivateInternetAccess (you can also check out our full list of official supported providers).
SnagFilms particularly excels in terms of making their service available across a variety of platforms. Supported devices to watch free movies on SnagFilms include an app for the iPhone & iPad, the Blackberry, the Amazon Kindle Fire, as well as Rokus and most popular streaming media devices.
We know people are getting new streaming devices and are looking for ways to put them to good use. SnagFilms’ portability for all these devices is a big plus. And if you are a webmaster or you like to post videos on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+, SnagFilms even allows you to embed their free movies on your favorite social media site or WordPress Blog.
To get the best possible streaming video quality for Snagfilms and its excellent selection of documentary and independent films, we recommend using a high-speed HD router such as the Netgear R7000 DD-WRT which can be tweaked for optimal high-quality video streaming.
An older router may prevent you from getting the best wireless speeds and it will not include VPN integration options such as OpenVPN & PPTP client connectivity for connecting to a US IP address. The open-source DD-WRT firmware has advanced wireless boosting and high-speed throughput options for increased stability and performance.
Using a DD-WRT Router with VPN integration, allows users to share their VPN connection with all of their favorite devices simultaneously. FlashRouters offers these high-end devices and includes free support with every purchase to make sure your end networking gateway works at peak performance.
An upgraded high-speed DD-WRT Router makes an excellent birthday gift for the techie who thinks he has every gadget. It would also be great for the movie/streaming video lover in your life or a family member who has moved overseas for business or military service.
Best Free Movies to Watch on SnagFilms
SnagFilms describes itself as offering “the broadest collection of great independent movies you can watch right now, on demand, for free, and share with others – films that entertain and inform, engage and inspire, satisfy every taste, encourage discovery and create community.”
While it’s fun to watch the latest blockbuster film releases from the Marvel or DC Comics family or the latest Purge movie, mixing in a few unique and free films keeps things interesting (and the thinking may activate and replenish the brain a little).
Below are just a few categorized, interesting free movies titles you can watch on SnagFilms (links will take you directly to the film page to watch).
Free Streaming Movies: Independent/Classic Films
Creature From the Black Lagoon (1954) – One of those fantastic, supremely cheap monster movies from the 1950s, Creature From the Black Lagoon is grandly dated, B-movie bliss.
Reefer Madness (1935) – As marijuana legalization inches forward across the US, cast your eyes back nearly a century and enjoy the overblown, weed-addled horrors presented in the classic Reefer Madness.
Night of the Living Dead (1968) – Okay, now it’s time to ditch the campy stuff and go for the old classics that still retain their original power. In terms of sheer, chilling, physical and psychological horror, it doesn’t get much better than George A. Romero’s original masterwork.
The Last Man on Earth (1964) – Have you seen I Am Legend? What about The Omega Man featuring Charlton Heston? Well, this adaptation of the same Richard Matheson story predates both of those movies and features Vincent Price in the starring role. How do you skip that?
Free Streaming Documentary Films
Street Fight (2006) – A local favorite. The interesting tale of Newark NJ mayoral candidate Cory Booker trying to fight against the long-running political machine of this downtrodden city.
The Weather Underground (2003) – A fascinating look at one of the most notorious American activist groups of the 1970s, the titular Weather Underground.
American Grindhouse (2010) – Did Quentin Tarantino and/or Robert Rodriguez activate your interest in the shock/exploitation genre of film? Well, check out this documentary which explores the origins of that very style.
And for the lovers of the natural world, SnagFilms has a category for Science, Nature, Animal, and Environmental documentary films featuring 94 films such as National Geographic’s Human Footprint, The Secret Life of Cats, and Drugs Inc.: Pill Nation.
Free Streaming Music Documentaries/Concert Films
Kurt and Courtney (1997) – A documentary about Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain and the way his life turned after meeting his eventual wife Courtney Love.
loudQUIETloud: A Film About The Pixies (2007)- A personal favorite. This free documentary tells the tale of the short-lived original incarnation of the late 80s/early 90s grunge music icons The Pixies and their long-awaited return to the stage.
Heavy Metal Parking Lot (1986) – This one sort of straddles the line between a documentary and a bootleg, but if you want to get a taste of the scene outside of a Judas Priest concert in the ’80s, then Heavy Metal Parking Lot is an invaluable document.
